"What do you think they're talking about?" asked Jane thoughtfully. Catherine shook her head. "It's not our place to know." The younger sighed once more, leaning upon her arms on the window sill.

Mary didn't knock. She merely entered, watching the two girls with a carefully maintained expression that could have easily been made of pure ice. "They're discussing road travel," she told the girls simply, sweeping into the room.

"Something wrong with the roads?" Catherine inquired.

Mary smiled, but it didn't reach her eyes. "There is an escalated amount of thieves on the road lately; a particular band has been giving rich travellers some trouble. We will be escorted, of course, so there is no need to worry."

Jane glanced over at Mary with a flicker of curiosity in her eyes. "Father will be alright?" "Of course he will, Janey," Catherine assured. "He is our father, after all."

Mary watched them critically. "He has a small entourage accompanying him as well. As I said, Robert was merely warning him of the danger, and it's very possible and highly plausible that nothing at all will happen to him."

Jane's cheeks flushed with embarrassment. "I'm just worried about him."

"Don't worry so visibly, then," Mary replied simply. "Your father will be perfectly fine, I assure you. He is a very important man." Her eyes narrowed slightly, like those of a falcon with its talons extended. "Oh, yes, very important, Richard is!" Lady Eleanor suddenly cried from the doorway, running to the window to wave madly out of it as the carriage drew away. Down below, the copper-haired man - positively identified as Robert Bullen, not a servant at all - glanced up, shaking his head.

Catherine raised an elegant eyebrow. "Right. And we're related to her in what way?" Jane, who had moved aside as Eleanor had approached, returned to her seat to pour herself another cup of tea.

"I'm your father's sister, silly! It's Robbie you're not related to," Eleanor giggled. "Oh, and your uncle Edward, of course, but he's at Court all the time..." The Lady sighed then, shaking her head before brightening again. "Ah, well, I much prefer my own household to the bustle of Court! It's much nicer, you know." Mary frowned. "Mother, perhaps it is best if you return to your room. I'm sure the Lady of the household will see you settled." "Oh, heavens, Jane and I have never gotten along well," Eleanor said, waving her hand flippantly. "I'll be returning to Chestermire soon, anyway."

"Mother doesn't generally like to be disturbed when she's in her parlour, either," Jane told her softly. "Which is why Kitty does so much to run this place." Catherine nodded, finishing her tea and setting it down on the tea table. "Is there something we should be learning while we're all just sitting around here, or would you prefer we just resort to our own devices when we get there?"

Kay sat in the kitchen shedding the onions for chopping for the food. The onion tears fell down her face as her eyes stang.

Mary hissed lightly, turning around. "I really do hope that the question you have just asked me is rhetorical, otherwise you time and Court will be... less than pleasant, at best. What I have seen of your 'devices' displeases me greatly - especially the amount of reading you do," the woman said, her eyes pinpointing Jane. "You will not be doing that at Court, let me assure you!"

Jane lowered her chin sheepishly. "I know..." Catherine sighed. "I understand; please forgive us. We're both on edge with these new...events that are transpiring."

If Mary had been a cat, her fur would have lain flat, and she would have twitched her tail. Instead, she regarded them coolly, nodding her head. "Understandable. But, as I said, I will go over what is expected of you when we are in the carriage and on our way. Do not bring it up again."
