I'll just share my idea if the rp is after Aang and the Fire Nation turning good. At that point, all the Air Nomads are dead.

Idea: Air Nomads aren't "extinct," per say. The Air Nomads had predicted such an attack and, as preparation for it, sent some of their people (mostly the youngest Air Nomads, that way they wouldn't remember being Air Nomads) to live in the Fire Nation as Fire Nation people.
When you hide something most searched for in the most obvious place... well, it tends to go overlooked.
So generations passed with Air Nomads hidden amongst the Fire Nation. A few of the eldest Air Nomads tried to keep their culture semi-alive but eventually it perished. In its wake, a growing unrest grew. Unrest at the concept that the Fire Nation had extinguished all of Air Nomads.
Eventually, some Air Nomads gathered to form an organization against Fire Nation. Their plans are quite simple: get revenge. Exterminate the now good Fire Nation.
Air Nomads that are still alive and hidden in the Fire Nation are split into three fractions: Most don't even know they're an Air Nomad. They just think they can't bend at all. A very small few discovered they could Airbend. These are usually swiftly sucked into the third and last fraction - the organization of Air Nomads seeking revenge.
Whatever Air Nomads that knew the original Air Nomadic way have long since been deceased and with them the culture.

But for this idea, you'd probably need Aang to fix the Air Nomads back up and solve all the issues.
And, as I said, it's a very convoluted idea. On top of that, it requires making the Air Nomads OOC, in a way, seeing as Air Nomads aren't vengeful people.

Okay let's just leave out the whole plot of what happened in the actual series. This has nothing to do with it. So air nomads are not gone.
